Carrefour Returns to India with Apparel Group Partnership

French retail giant Carrefour has made its much anticipated return to India after a 12 year absence, marking a significant development in the country’s organised retail landscape.

The comeback is being driven through a strategic franchise partnership with Dubai based Apparel Group, which is bringing Carrefour’s global retail format back to Indian consumers. The first consumer facing Carrefour store has opened at H&S Mall, Boulevard Walk, Greater Noida West, offering more than 15,000 SKUs across grocery, fresh produce, bakery, household essentials, personal care and general merchandise.

The return is being celebrated with a special evening hosted by Apparel Group on 3 September, bringing together industry stakeholders and marking a new chapter for the global retailer in India.

Carrefour had first entered India in 2010 through its cash and carry wholesale format before exiting the market in 2014. Its return comes at a time when international retailers are increasingly expanding their presence in India, attracted by the country’s growing consumer market and organised retail potential.

For the footwear and fashion industry, Carrefour’s comeback is another indicator of the growing opportunities within India’s large and rapidly evolving retail ecosystem, while Apparel Group continues to strengthen its portfolio and footprint in the country. India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) could further open up opportunities for international retailers, easing access to global products and creating new avenues for brands across categories including footwear and fashion.
