Nike Overhauls Its Top Team With Two Key Hires From Retail

Nike has reworked its senior line-up in a single week, adding a supply chain specialist at Converse and a commercial chief at group level. Kristin Bauer joined Converse as Chief Operating Officer on 14 September, according to an internal memo signed by Converse CEO Aaron Cain and seen by Bloomberg News, and reports to Nike COO Venky Alagirisamy. She arrives from Foot Locker, now part of Dick’s Sporting Goods, where she was Chief Supply Chain Officer for almost three years until April, and has held supply chain and logistics roles at TJX Cos. and Ulta Beauty. The timing is pointed. Converse has now reported 13 consecutive quarters of falling revenue, and its full-year results, published at the end of June, showed a 31% decline on a reported basis and 32% at constant currency, with sales down in every region. Days earlier, Nike CEO Elliott Hill told staff that Jane Ewing would join as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer on 7 September. Ewing spent nearly 14 years at Walmart, most recently as interim chief executive of Sam’s Club in China. Nike had scrapped the Chief Commercial Officer role eight months earlier, which makes its return a notable change of course. Taken together, the two appointments show a company leaning on operators from outside the sportswear world. Bauer’s career has been built on getting the right product to the right place at the right time, a discipline that matters for a brand whose fortunes hinge on inventory, sell-through and the health of its retail partners. Ewing brings big-box retail scale and a commercial outlook shaped by one of the world’s largest retailers. Neither hire guarantees a turnaround, and Converse’s figures show how much ground remains to be recovered. But for the retailers and suppliers who deal with both brands, the choice of executives offers a clue to where Nike expects the fixes to come from: tighter operations, sharper commercial discipline and closer attention to what happens on the shop floor.
