Several footwear companies from Portugal – Felgueiras, Oliveira de Azeméis and São João da Madeira – are temporarily replacing their usual footwear production for the production of masks. The goal is to donate this technical equipment to healthcare professionals and nursing homes.
This spontaneous movement is coordinated by the Footwear Technology Centre of Portugal (CTCP) and is following the technical specifications resealed yesterday by the Public Health Authority.
Each type of mask has its specific production requirements. Disposable surgical masks, for instances, require a “triple filter layer for increased protection, securing elastic bands, easily moldable nasal clip” and must be “100% polypropylene”, to assure “high responsibility, flexibility in bacterial filtration and resistance to fluids and splashes”.
