The European Union has introduced new rules to stop companies from destroying unsold apparel, clothing accessories, and footwear, aiming to cut waste and carbon emissions. Currently, an estimated 4-9% of unsold textiles are destroyed, generating around 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂ annually.
Under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), large companies will face a ban on destroying unsold items from 19 July 2026. Medium-sized firms must comply by 2030. Limited exemptions will apply for safety or damaged goods, with national authorities overseeing enforcement.
A separate Implementing Act, effective February 2027, will require businesses to disclose volumes of unsold consumer goods they discard using a standardised format.
The EU is urging companies to shift toward resale, reuse, donation, and remanufacturing signalling a stronger push toward circular and sustainable business practices.
