The state government of West Bengal has decided to inject approximately 100 billion rupees into the Calcutta Leather Complex. This investment will lead to the establishment of 187 tanneries and 139 footwear units, creating 250,000 new jobs. This will increase the total employment from 500,000 to 750,000.

Chief Adviser to the Chief Minister, Alapan Bandyopadhyay, made this announcement following a mid-July review meeting led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The state also plans to allocate 19 billion rupees (227 million US dollars) for infrastructure improvements and 4.75 billion rupees (56 million US dollars) for a drinking water project.

Additionally, the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) will develop a leather mall near the Alipore Museum to promote leather products marketing.
